Meet Uganda’s 2026 DAISY Award Winner: Kobusigye Hellen

For the patients, families and colleagues who nominated Kobusigye Hellen for this year’s DAISY Award, there was a common thread in their stories: Hellen is someone they can count on.

Hellen has been named OneWorld Health’s 2026 DAISY Award winner in Uganda, recognizing the care and compassion she brings to patients and families at Kijunjubwa Medical Center.

One of Hellen’s colleagues remembered arriving at Kijunjubwa as a new member of the team. Hellen made a point to welcome her and help her understand everything she needed to get started.

That willingness to help didn't end after her first few days. Her colleague described Hellen as hardworking and flexible — someone who is willing to step in when the team needs her, even on her days off.

Patients and families shared similar experiences.

One family member recalled bringing a child to Kijunjubwa Kitara Medical Center for care and being struck by Hellen’s kindness. The experience gave the family confidence in the care they received and helped make Kijunjubwa a place they wanted to return to when they needed medical care.

Another family remembered Hellen welcoming them when they arrived and helping guide them through their visit, offering reassurance along the way.

A patient visiting Kijunjubwa for the first time also remembered Hellen’s warm welcome and the attention she provided throughout the visit.

These aren't necessarily the moments that show up in a medical chart. But they matter.

For someone who is sick or worried about a family member, having a nurse who takes time to welcome you, answer questions and make sure you know you’re being cared for can change the experience entirely.

For Hellen’s colleagues, knowing there is someone on the team who is ready to step in and help matters, too.

Together, the nominations paint a picture of a nurse who brings both care and consistency to her work — and whose impact is felt by the patients, families and colleagues around her.
