Hope in Masindi: Healing That Reaches Beyond the Hospital

Can you imagine being bedridden for years for a common condition whose treatment simply isn’t accessible to you?
Sarah can.
Sarah Kisuma is a mother of 4 who lives in the Masindi region of Northwest Uganda. Unfortunately, during the process of delivering her fourth child she experienced a prolapsed uterus and was unable to afford the much-needed follow-up surgery to correct it. As a result, she became bedridden and suffered for months, which eventually turned to years.
After the opening of the Masindi Kitara Medical Center, OneWorld Health’s first health center in Uganda, Sarah’s sister went to visit hoping for a solution to the suffering. To her surprise, Dr. Godson Senyondo and his medical team were familiar with Sarah’s condition and wanted to help.
Around the same time, a medical team from the US was in Masindi on a OneWorld Health short-term volunteer trip. Dr. Randy Baker, a surgeon from Stillwater, Oklahoma and OneWorld Health volunteer, was able to work alongside Dr. Godson to provide him the training and experience necessary to perform the surgery.
The surgery was a huge success and Sarah’s life and the lives of her family have been changed as a result. She is grateful for the care she received through OneWorld Health and in staying true to Ugandan tradition, she gifted the team at MKMC with a bag of greens and chicken to show her appreciation.
Sarah’s story is just one of thousands. The work you are supporting in Uganda and Nicaragua is impacting lives just like hers and transforming entire communities who are being served by OneWorld Health.
