Grace’s Second Chance: A Mother’s Story from Rural Uganda

Grace was in labor—alone, afraid, and miles from the nearest hospital.
In her small village in rural Uganda, access to medical care is almost nonexistent. The roads are rough. Transportation is scarce. And for expectant mothers like Grace, every passing minute can mean the difference between life and loss.
But this time was different.
Thanks to OneWorld Health’s growing maternity services in Bweyale, Grace made it to the clinic—just in time. Her baby girl was born early, fragile, and weighing barely three pounds. In a place where specialized care is rare, Grace feared the worst.
But our neonatal care unit, operating at near full capacity, had a bed waiting.
For the next ten days, Grace never left her daughter’s side. She sat by her tiny bed, holding hope in her heart as our local team provided round-the-clock care, monitoring every breath, every heartbeat, every precious ounce gained.
Today, her baby is thriving.
Grace’s story is just one of thousands—mothers who now have a place to turn, babies who now have a chance to survive, and families who are no longer left to face childbirth alone.
Because of your support, women across Uganda are receiving care, dignity, and the fighting chance they deserve.
