Back to School, Back to Life: Joseph’s Recovery from Severe Malaria

Joseph had been suffering from severe fatigue and pain, so much so that it was clear to his parents that he wouldn’t be able to continue going to school. Joseph and his family visited a volunteer outpatient clinic, and when the clinician examined him, she knew Joseph would be better served at the OneWorld Health in-patient facility. His mother joined Joseph on the hour-and-a-half journey and stayed by his side during his three days of treatment.

Joseph was diagnosed with a severe case of malaria. For three days he received IV fluids and antibiotics. Once he was discharged, the doctors made sure his mother understood the complicated medication directions and that she had a safe way to get home.

Months later, the hospital director was in his office when Joseph’s mother arrived. She had come to let them know that Joseph had completely recovered and was able to return to school. She was overwhelmed with gratitude. When asked how she got there, she simply said she took the bus. Later, the hospital director looked up what a bus ride would cost from her village. It totaled $10, the equivalent of a week’s wages. For this mother, the expense was worth it, just to say thank you.
