Partnering for Access: OneWorld Health and ASHA Expand Care in Honduras

OneWorld Health has been an ASHA partner since 2015 and works with communities in need in Uganda, Nicaragua, and Honduras to provide quality, affordable healthcare by building and operating medical facilities that have served nearly 750,000 people.

When we started in Honduras, we were challenged to think of new ways to reach people with medical care. While the need is great, many communities are too small to support a full-service medical facility. With smaller and more rural communities needing access to care, our traditional model would have reached fewer people with a higher cost.

Instead, we created two innovative ways to better serve these communities. With support from LEPP, we established telehealth and a mobile clinic to contain costs while supporting more communities with high-quality care.

·      In our Portrerillos teleclinic, patients see a nurse and then connect virtually with a doctor. The facility has seen nearly 1,000 patients since opening late last year.

·      Our mobile clinic is driving to communities daily to provide care. This fully equipped medical unit on wheels has two exam rooms and a full staff, to offer a range of services from consults to ultrasounds. We expect to serve over more than 350 patients a month.
