Clinic Day 3

Dec. 13, 2018

I knew that coming to Africa would be an eye opening experience, that I would be challenged and changed by the things I saw, but I wasn’t prepared for the number of moments that would reshape the way I think. I’ve seen joy in the midst of suffering, patience in the face of pain, and a gratefulness that is overwhelming.

But what stands out most is the shared human experience, those things that transcend our countries, our ethnicities, and our social status. I’ve discovered that a smile is universal, that you don’t have to speak the same language to communicate, and that touch can say more than words. 1 Corinthians 13:7-8 says, “Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails.”

I’ve seen the truth of that in Africa. When a group of people motivated by love leave their families and their homes to serve others, amazing things happen. Yes, people are treated for illnesses, but more than that, their hearts are treated with hope. Hope that someone cares, hope that they are not alone, and hope that things can be better. In a world full of darkness and pain, Africa has taught me many things, but most importantly, that love wins!
